Nausori women to get involved in sports July 04, 2009
Fiji Project - a bid to get rural women involved in sports was launched in the village of Nausori yesterday.
This project will promote healthy living and provide an opportunity for women to get involved in coaching and administration.
This was an initiative of FASANOC’s Women in Sports Commission which will bring together women from Nausori and neighbouring village to learn Cricket and Softball skills.
There will also be leadership skills training as well as education on health issues such as breast cancer and HIV/AIDS.
Ratu Meli Balenaivalu and the women of Nausori warmly welcomed the initiative and launched the Project with an indoor demonstration of Ratu Baleinaivalu’s cricket and softball skills.
Women in Sport Project Officer Mela Druwani said that the sport training session commences next Wednesday and will continue until September.
“Don’t worry about your age, don’t worry about your weight – this is an initiative for all Women to be involved in and have fun with,” Druwani said.
FASANOC’s Women in Sports received the Oceania region’s first ever grant from Women Win earlier this year with their proposal to develop the project.
This project was developed by a committee including representative from Oceania Sports Education Programme (OSEP), Ministry of Women, Fiji Cricket Association and Fiji Islands Baseball and Softball Association, STOP HIV and AIDS and the Cancer Society of Fiji.
