Hassan tipped to lead Fiji FUTSAL
July 04, 2009

2008 Oceania Football Confederation FUTSAL championship golden boot winner, Kamal Hassan has been tipped to lead the Fiji side in the 2009 championship which kicks off in Suva on Monday.

The Lautoka striker is one of four survivors from last season’s team which finish fourth behind Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tahiti.

Other survivors include Dinesh Mudliar, Sandeep Nair and Mira Sahib.

Sahib skippered the side in the championship last season but it is believed the Fiji FUTSAL officials are looking at selecting a new leader this time around to guide the host nation.

Fiji FUTSAL secretary Jainendra Sukhu said the team captain will be named after the final training run of the side on Sunday.

“We have decided to name the team captain on Sunday and the team manager and coach Imtiaz Khan will do the honors.”

“We have some senior players in the team who can guide the side well but I cannot comment on any particular player at this point in time.”

According to Sukhu, the team has been doing well in training and has registered impressive results in their friendly matches against selection sides over the week.

“We played a USP selection side which had Joseph Nimariau and other Vanuatu and Solomon players and managed to beat them 4-0 and in another friendly match the team beat Central Vuci 3-1.”

“The coach has been spending a lot of time in putting together a formidable combination and the players are giving their best in training and adjusting well to the pattern set out by the coach.”

Fiji kicks off its campaign against Vanuatu on Monday at 8pm while the Solomon Islands play New Caledonia at 6pm.

Fiji team: Simione Tamanisau (Navua), Emori Ragata (Labasa), Mira Sahib (Labasa),
Uraia Loki (Nadi), Aisea Codro (Ba), Mohammad Shalmeen (Nadi), Christopher Junior (DAV,Ba), Dinesh Mudliar (Suva), Sandeep Nair (Suva), Joseph Mishra (Suva), Shivam Nathan (Suva), Kamal Hassan (Lautoka).
