July 02, 2009

Local rugby fans can expect to witness and mingle with international 7s icons in action here in Fiji early January at the Suva Rugby Festival.

Top clubs from South Africa, New Zealand and Kenya have been invited to be part of the inaugural Suva Rugby Union Suva City 7s tournament next January.

The SRU in celebrating 100 years of rugby in Fiji’s has planned a 2010 Rugby Festival which will see up to eight international teams grace our shores to compete with eight local teams.

“This will be the toughest and biggest 7s tournament not only in the Fiji Rugby calendar but also in the world,” Commissioner of Police and former Fiji international Esala Teleni said during the launch.

SRU chairman Vilikesa Rauca said they had received great feedbacks from SA, NZ and Kenya and was confident the three countries will join in on the Suva City 7s.

“We’re targeting other countries as well. Australia and England is uncertain because they have their respective competitions played during the time we will be holding the 7s tournament in January,” Rauca said.

The eight local spots will be from the winners of the Suva 7s Series held in three venues from November 6 to January 9 in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa respectively.

Two spots will be drawn from wildcards.

SRU has also reserved a competition for club, secondary school, primary school, women and the golden oldies.
