Super Light Weight Waisake Ratu is eager to maintain his unbeaten record when he takes on rugged Junior Farzan Ali in the Prasad Main Event Boxing Promotion at Vodafone Prince Charles Park next month.
The Naitasiri man from Serea village has never lost a fight in Nadi and is keen to remain unbeaten for the eighth time.
But he is up against champion fighter Ali, who also has not lost a fight.
Ratu last fought against Nirosi Yamanaka in the Tokyo Open Championship at the Tokyo Dome in 2005 and is looking forward to returning to the ring.
“I’ve been fighting for the last 15 years and I feel there has been no competition, causing the sport to die out,” Ratu said.
“I’m eager to get back into the ring and I’m happy that (32-year-old romoter Ashwin) Prasad has given me a chance to fight. Junior Farzan Ali is one of the well known boxers in Fiji and until now he remains undefeated. I just want to take him on to find out for myself if he really is that good.”
Ratu moved from his Naitasiri boxing club this week to Suva and will train under the guidance of Fiji Boxing Commission chairman Tim Nobriga.
He said that the fight will determines the course of his boxing career.
“I’ve represented Fiji in the 1997 Pacific Games in Pagopago as an amateur boxer and I moved to professional after my boxing clash at the provincial competition turned out to be a brawl between the spectators.
“Boxing has taken me to so many places but this fight is very important to me. If I win I will continue with the sport and if I lose I will hang my boxing glove.”
Ratu is currently coached by his uncle Pauliasi Ratu. He is the elder brother of boxers Jo Naleca, Opeti Tagi and Saimoni Ratu.
