Consistency was strength behind Latter Day Saint School’s performance as they edged Veiuto Primary 16-14 in the Under-14 grade Post Fiji Primary Schools Basketball finals at Ed’s Court in Raiwaqa today.
LDS proved dominant from the first spell after sealing an 8-6 lead and they continued to keep their counterparts at bay in what FIBA development officer Mark Seccombe tagged as a thrilling encounter.
Seccombe said that it was great to watch the young talent on show as the sport begins to take a positive turn gauging from the interest of enthusiasts at grassroots level.
“Its great to see these young players show on court what they’ve learnt throughout the season,” Seccombe said.
“This is the first time we’re having the primary school competition here in Fiji and it not only benefits the players but the association as well as because these students are the future prospects of Basketball Fiji.
“I can say LDS deserved the win as they were a better team and I also thanked Veiuto Primary for giving the champs a good game,” he added.
John Wesley Primary School took out the Under-12 title after defeating Veiuto Primary 10-4 while the Under-10 final between LDS and International Primary School which was to be held at the International school court was postponed due to unfavourable weather condition.
Meanwhile, Seccombe who signed a one year contract with Basketball Fiji will conduct a clinic during the school holiday.
Expecting a big turn out from primary school students he added that the clinic comes with an intention of hoisting the competition level in the primary schools meet next year.
