Soccer or football is billed as a gentlemens’ game in Fiji, but the women of Labasa are lacing up to change perception to the sport.
They aim to make an impact debutant in this weekend’s Fiji Women Soccer Inter-District Championship by promoting that women could be superior with soccer boots on.
Leading the ‘Babasiga Lionesses’ is Mili Lee who wants an end to negligence towards women soccer in Fiji.
“There is not much support shown towards the development of women’s soccer in the North, but we hope to rewrite that in the IDC in Ba this weekend,” she added.
“I’m grateful that we’ve managed to put together a team for the IDC because we have faced a lot of drawbacks in our build-up,” Lee said.
“Finance was not our side, apart from that there was not much interest towards the sport from the girls and women in the North.”
“It is going to be tough for us as this is our first appearance in the competition.”
The Labasa soccer team is expected to arrive in Ba for their final training run this afternoon.
