Netball selectors bank on fitness, game
December 01, 2008

Fitness, game and mental test are the three main components Fiji netball national selectors will use to select the final squad during the trials this weekend.

Netball Fiji Coach Melissa Walker is eager to start work with the final squad and has approached 26 players both in the under-21 and national squad to attend the trials.

The New Zealander who has been contracted by the local association for the next three years confirmed that the players have been informed about their selection criteria and NF will only select players that put up with their conditions.

“Our selection criterion has been given to the girls, I’ve made it clear to all the U21 and national players what it is that we’re looking for,” the former NPC coach said.

“Each girl will get to the trial in there two positions that they have put down, we’ve stressed to put there number one position first and a second back up position that they’re going to play. They know that there are two components for the U21 fitness test before the game while the national squad has three components. Fitness, games, and mental test in which questions will be asked to players.

“The U21 players have already had this questions asked for them at the last trial in October. The players understand the basic are the most important component that will be the number one that the selectors will be looking at. Understanding the court positioning, teamwork and communication on and off the court is very important. Fitness comes together with the understanding of the game and this will be a winning factor.”

26 players have been invited to attend the trials and with the final selection expected to be a tough one, Walker said only 15 will be selected from both teams.

“The most important things for us are that all the girls will be kept in our database as we will be training again at the end of next year for the Commonwealth Games. This team is being selected for the Mini Games in September so the bigger picture for the player is to aim for the Commonwealth Games team.”

The Netball Fiji trials will be held at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay this Saturday at 9am.
