It was an all Suva affair in the Vulaca Trophy challenge as defending Men’s champ Suva Black edged out its second string team with three straight sets to retain the prize title at the Tattersals Leisure centre yesterday.
Suva Black being reigning champs played with outmost defense and Coach Jo Mataitoga said their weekly club games had improved the players’ consistency.
“I’m impressed with our performance, we deserve to win because the boys have shown commitment towards our preparation,” Mataitoga said.
“I believe the strength behind the win was team work and consistency and I’m happy that the boys played according to the game plan throughout the encounter. The win all comes down to our performance at club level and I thank the Suva volleyball association for strengthening our weekly club games and for introducing the promotion relegation series.”
The likes of national rep Vana Serevi, Biu Ramise, Jiujiuwa Koroi, Samuela Vasuinadi, Saiyasi Nayacalevu and skipper Waisake Raratabu proved to be a driving catalyst denying Raiwai Gold a chance to qualify to the final after a 2-0 win in the semis.
Suva Blues had a tough semifinal after fighting tooth and nail for a 2-1 win over Veiyasana.
Meanwhile, Suva One also took out the women’s title after defeating Raiwai 3-0.
