Police league team the best of the best

Fiji Police rugby league captain Jim Patrick is proud of their achievement at the Police Rugby League World Cup where they won the title, defeating New Zealand 20-5 in Australia in their debut.

The side has just returned from Australia where they defeated all walk away victorious.
 
"We went in as underdogs, I think all of the team looked down at us," Patrick said.

"But what kept us going and kept us motivated was our faith in God. God was our strength and motivation.'

Fiji won three top awards at the world meet, Saiasi Nikola took out the top points scorer with 28 points and top try scorer with seven tries.

Fiji also won the highest tries scored in the tournament, 13 against Papua New Guinea, four against NZ, seven against Australia and five against Great Britain.

"This is a huge achievement for us because only three players in the team have background in league, all the others have always been playing union," Patrick said.

"But the three weeks we spent preparing was all they needed to get with the league rules and through the strength God gave us we made it."

Seven players from Fiji have made into the world best 17 – Tikiko Uluiviti, Pio Tabuyasei, captain Patrick, Jock Liuta, Lasaro Turagadrau, Atunaisa Turagabiu and Samuela Bola.

Turagabiu also won the player of the tournament.

The Fiji Police league team will take part in the national celebration on Friday with the Vodafone Fiji Bati team, a march kicking off the celebration at 3pm.
