Suva Special Education leads day-one November 08, 2008
Suva Special Education School had a strong start to their campaign after completing day-one of the Digicel Fiji Paralympic Games at the top of the medal tally.
The 24-member squad scooped 15 gold, 12 silver and three bronze medals after a strong show at the National Stadium yesterday while Lautoka Special School stands at second best after collecting 13 gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
The second day of competition with the field wide open and Fiji Disabled People Association executive Sainiana Tukana is expecting arduous rivalry between the top two finishers.
“There’s strong competition in the individual event from both field and tracks and its good to see that athletes are not only competing but they’re enjoying the event,” Tukana said.
“The team event will be tough because the result from the field will depend on team work. There is more excitement in this event and the same time we’re developing the sports within the disable community.”
Hilton Special School settles in third place with 10 gold and four silver medals while Team Samoa secures forth place with seven gold medals.
Team Samoa chief de mission Frida Keil said that the Paralympic Games has come at an opportune time to expose the athletes.
“There’s not much interest on disable sports in Samoa like here in Fiji,” Keil said.
“We were impressed with the turn-out, the support and also the level at which the competition is played here in Fiji. We conducted a trial in Samoa last month and we selected six athletes for this tour.
“I’m happy with their performance; this event has further developed their skills and has exposed them to tense competition. This is a learning experience for us and I hope that we’ll be able to field a much bigger squad next year.”
The event which was officially opened on Wednesday with a march along the streets of Suva has more than 600 athletes from 17 special education school around Fiji.
Australia Sports Commission Rob Regent was the chief guest to the event and has also helped fund the development of the sports for the disabled throughout the Pacific.
