Fiji’s first ever Commonwealth gold! October 14, 2008
Fiji’s weightlifting representative to the Commonwealth Youth Games Manueli Tulo has won Fiji’s first ever gold medal in the history of the Games in Pune, India last night.
The Fijian youngster achieved a feat none from this South Seas Islands has done before when he broke two records and missed one by just one kilogram to score Fiji’s first ever gold at the meet.
FASANOC reports that Tulo broke the Commonwealth Youth Games 56 kg category Snatch record of 97 kg (previous record 90 kg), the 56 kg category Overall record of 219 kg (previous record 200kg) but missed out on the Clean and Jerk record by 1 kg to snatch the gold medal.
The Clean and Jerk category went to India with a 123 kg lift.
India took out the Silver medal while the Bronze went to Malaysia.

After his win, Tulo said he was confident coming into this competition and very proud and happy to have won gold.
Tulo thanked Paul Coffa and the Coffa family for their tremendous support while he was training in Noumea, he thanked FASANOC for its support and for sending him to the CYG and he also acknowledged the contributions of all his supporters and all his family.
