Labasa, Tavua lead IDC points after Day 1
October 10, 2008

Surprise packages in the 2008 Courts Homecentres Inter-District Championship, Tavua and Labasa; have taken the lead after Day One at Govind Park in Ba.

The goldminers displayed a fine effort against Nasinu in their opening match to register a 2-1 win which got sweeter as giants Ba and Lautoka held each other in the final fixture last night to give Tavua the advantage heading into today’s proceedings.

Tavua’s new find Esava Natisiwai who netted both of their goals yesterday will be a player to watch in the reminder of the tournament after scoring scintillating goals which brought the Govind Park crowd to its feet.

Vodafone Labasa, meanwhile, registered the biggest win of the day outclassing a hapless Suva outfit 3-0 to stamp its mark into Pool 1 and have the comparative lead in the pool which also comprises of teams like Nadroga, Nadi and Rewa.

Fiji soccer wonder boy Roy Krishna was at his usual best as he scored two wonderful goals in the first spell to give the northerners a commanding 2-0 lead at the breather.

Ni Vanuatu Joseph Nimariau connected in with a well timed header in the second spell to seal the fate of the Lions in the match.

Suva looked the weakest of the eight Super Premier teams which performed on the first day with the imported players in the Whites (Suva) line-up failing badly to make an impression against the more skilled and experienced opponents.

Labasa imports of Shivam Swamy and Angatesh Rao featured well in the match with Swamy starting at central midfield and playing a commanding role all along and Rao coming off the bench in the second spell.

Meanwhile, luck did not favour Nadi and Nadroga in the opening match of the 70th IDC as both teams laced with imports and experienced players failed to find the back of the net.

Both teams displayed fast paced entertaining soccer but when it came to scoring, both had their targets denied, either by good goalkeeping on both sides or the post and cross bar which for more than four times blocked sure goals for either sides.

In the matches today, Rewa faces Nadroga (9.30am), Nasinu takes on Navua (10.45am), Lautoka comes up against leaders Tavua (12 noon), Nadroga takes on Suva (2.30pm) in its second match of the day, Nadi faces Labasa (4pm), Nasinu takes on Lautoka, (5.30pm), Rewa meets Suva (6.45pm) with Ba and Navua (8pm) closing the curtains today.

Day One results:
Nadi 0-0 Nadroga, Tavua 2-1 Nasinu, Labasa 3-0 Suva, Ba 1-1 Lautoka.

Roy well done. Please dont fly too high you need to get the Lloyad Farebrother trophy for Labasa while you are at your best. Unlike many top players Labasa has produced and never brought the real glory for Labasa. Dont be traitors like Maciu and Pita. Have fun guys be safe.
