Tailevu North celebrates rugby win today
October 07, 2008

Rugby creates another history in Fiji today when the chiefs and the people of Tailevu North will march through Korovou Town for the first time to celebrate last weeks’ Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy feat.

The Northland rugby team, a minnow in Fiji provincial rugby, created history last week by wresting the coveted silverware from the grasp of its relatives Tailevu South.

Today, Tailevu North celebrates the victory in style this afternoon when chiefs from Vugalei, Vereta, Naloto, Sawakasa, Dawasamu and surrounding districts converge at Korovou Town to commemorate the historic victory.

Northland Rugby Union secretary Tevita Kanalagi said the celebration would be a reminder of the rugby influence in the province.

“This is an occasion where we emphasise to the people of Tailevu North that they are the owners of the trophy and the team. It is to remind them that this prized silverware that we own today is the fruit of their support and hard work for six long and hard years,” he added.

“The team will present their achievement through a traditional ceremony because without the chiefs and the people we would not have been able to win.”

The celebration will start with a march through Korovou Town from the Korovou Police Station to Gatward Park where the possession led by the team, will be traditionally received by the chiefs.

The gathering will take a break at 3pm to allow the team to train at Gatward Park before they are hosted to a dinner in the evening.

Northland hosts neighbours Naitasiri on Saturday for their first defence of the trophy.
