Wong ready to win for Fiji in India October 06, 2008
Fiji badminton single champion Steven Wong is ready to create history at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India next week.
While his outstanding performance at the 2008 Fiji Secondary Schools Championship has earned him a spot in the two-member Fiji team, Wong is keeping his fingers crossed for a memorable debut at the CYG.
“I’ve had a taste of international competition while representing Fiji at the Australian Youth Festival so I expect the competition to be tough,” the 16-year-old said.
Wong is also the Fiji Under-16 champion.
“This should be an opportune time to prove myself internationally. I am one of the first two competitors to compete in India and without the guidance of an international sanctioned coach I will do my best to win for Fiji.”
The Fiji badminton team of Wong of Natabua High School and Fiji’s number two seed Devarisi Sharma will compete in both the boys’ single and doubles event because of age restriction.
