Rebrov fires Kazan closer to title
September 15, 2008

Former Tottenham striker Sergei Rebrov scored the only goal as Kazan took another step towards a first ever Russian title with a 1-0 home win over closest challengers Dynamo Moscow on Sunday.

Kazan have 45 points from 21 matches, nine points ahead of second-placed Dynamo.

Perm and CSKA Moscow, who on Sunday beat underdogs Yaroslavl 2-1 and Vladivostok 4-1 respectively, share third spot on 35 points.

Ukraine international Rebrov was on target after just two minutes firing home a rebound from 15 metres after a shot from teammate Hasan Kabze.

Reigning champions Zenit St Petersburg saw off Chechen side Terek Grozny 4-1 at the neutral venue of Makhachkala to boost their spirits ahead of their Champions League match against Juventus on Wednesday.

Russian internationals Andrei Arshavin, Konstantin Zyryanov and Pavel Pogrebnyak scored one apiece for Zenit along with Croatian defender Ivica Krizanac.

Sergei Bendz was on target for Grozny.

Nine-time champions Spartak Moscow suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of city rivals FC Moscow.

Spartak skipper Santos Mozart missed a third minute penalty but they still took the lead in the 15th minute through 18-year-old midfielder Vladislav Ryzhkov.

But FC Moscow levelled eight minutes after the interval when Argentinian striker Hector Bracamonte scored with from a penalty.

Nine minutes later second-half substitute midfielder Sergei Ivanov netted FC Moscow's winning goal beating Spartak goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa with a 20-metre shot.
