Lal exits champion of champions tourney September 05, 2008
Ratish Lal’s dreams of featuring in the quarterfinal of the 2008 World Singles Champion of Champion was shattered after he failed to beat England’s Andrew Squire in his last pool match.
Lal defeated defending World champ from Malaysia Safuan Said 9-3, 7-5 but he failed to keep the momentum in the last two games and went down fighting 4-8, 5-10 to Ireland’s Gary Kelly and 5-6, 6-7 to Squire.
After losing four of the ten games played in the two sections of the pool games, Lal has dropped five positions down after he was initially ranked sixth in the World singles.
Despite the disappointing exit, Fiji Lawn Bowling Association secretary Abdul Khalim said that Lal played well under the pressure.
“Ratish (Lal) started the competition on a high note but he failed to keep momentum throughout the pool game. He prepared well for the tour but I believe we didn’t give enough competition in the local green to push him,” Khalim said.
At the end of section two, Sandy Wotherspoon of Scotland has been seeded number one while Australia Leif Selby has been placed at second best.
Wales Mark Weaver has been ranked third followed by Shaun Addinall from South Africa. Kelly from Ireland claims fifth spot followed by Squire while Malaysian Said is placed eighth and has also qualified to the quarterfinal tonight.
