Lal faces mammoth task in Scotland September 05, 2008
It will be a do or die game for Fiji’s singles bowls champ Ratish Lal when he takes on England’s Andrew Squi in the last pool game of section two in the 2008 World Singles Champion of Champions Tournament in Aberdeen, Scotland last night .
Despite defeating the world champ from Malaysia Safuan Said 9-3, 7-5, Lal failed to keep the momentum and went down fighting 4-8, 5-10 to Ireland’s Gary Kelly.
The lost has placed him on the 11th position in the overall standing and he will need a comfortable win of two straight sets to be seeded on the eight spot and to feature in the quarterfinal tomorrow.
Fiji Lawn Bowling Association secretary Abdul Khalim is optimistic that Lal will create an upset in his last pool game.
“Ratish will need a comfortable win in his last pool game to move up to top eight,” Khalim said.
“His last game would be an interesting one as he takes on the England competitor. He has defeated his England counterpart so he will need to maintain the top form to win.”
At the end of section two Squi has settled on seventh spot while Lal who bowed out of the preliminary round last year has dropped three positions down.
