Navua, Rewa register impressive wins
August 29, 2008

Fiji Muslim National Championship defending champions Navua and 2008 hosts Rewa registered impressive victories in their opening pool matches at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori yesterday.

Navua fought tooth and nail against a young and determined Lodoni outfit marshaled by former Nasinu and Tailevu-Naitasiri striker Zaid Suleman to win 2-1.

Rewa, on the other hand, piped a star-studded Labasa side 1-0.

National defender Siga Ali scored Navua’s goals in the match to give the defending champs a formidable lead ahead of its big matches against Bemana and Ba.

Nasinu, laced with district reps was also taken to the wire by Macuata, but the southerners managed to pull a 3-2 win out of the fire.

Tournament organizer Mohammed Farouk said the first day’s matches produced entertaining and exciting football.

“Day 1 saw Navua, Rewa, Savusavu and Nasinu registered wins in their respective pool matches while Kasavu and Davuilevu managed a draw in their encounter,” added Farouk.

“The tournament will officially be opened this evening by the Australian High Commissioner James Batley and a total of 10 matches will be played today.

“I am urging football fans to come out in numbers and support their teams.”

Yesterday’s results: Davuilevu 0-0 Kasavu, Savusavu 1-0 Verata, Navua 2-1 Lodoni, Rewa 1-0 Labasa, Nasinu 3-2 Macuata.

Today’s fixtures: 2.10pm: Bemana vs Ba, Verata vs Davuilevu, 3.10pm: Maigania vs Sabeto, Savusavu vs Kasavu, 4.20pm: Suva vs Sigatoka, Lautoka vs Varavu, 5.30pm: Rewa vs Levuka, 7.00 Official Opening, 7.30pm: Nadi vs Labasa, 8.40pm: Lodoni vs Bemana, 9.50pm: Navua vs Ba.
