Singh returns to Malaysia after 7 years
August 29, 2008

Vijay Singh will return to Malaysia after a seven-year absence to appear in the Iskandar Johor Open which tees off in October, organisers said yesterday.

The Fijian is currently on top form, beating both Spain's Sergio Garcia and American Kevin Sutherland in a Sunday playoff to win the first event of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs and pick up his second victory of the year.

His last appearance in Malaysia was at the 2001 Malaysian Open, where he beat Irishman Padraig Harrington in a playoff for the title.

The Johor Open, which is going into its second year, is one of the biggest golf tournaments in Malaysia, with prize money of 500,000 dollars.

Defending champion Artemio Murakami of the Philippines will play in the tournament.

The 25-year-old is a rising star, especially after his debut in the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

Malaysian pros vying for the purse include 22-year-old Ben Leong, who has dazzled the golfing fraternity by winning three consecutive titles recently.

He won the Malaysian leg of the Asean Tour, the Terengganu Masters and the Worldwide Selangor Masters on the Asian Tour.

The Iskandar Johor Open will be played from October 30 to November 2 at the Royal Johor Country Club.
