Star-studded Navua eyes Muslim title
August 28, 2008

Defending Fiji Muslim League National Soccer champs Navua will field a star-studded team in the tournament which gets under way in Nausori this afternoon in the hope of bagging the title once again.

Coached by Fiji soccer assistant coach Saiyad Ali, the southerners will enter the tournament as favorites.

Laced with Navua reps like goalkeeper Sheik Moshin, defenders Siga Ali and Ismail Shaheem alongside Esala Ali, the boys in Red are the top bets in Pool A, which also has Ba, Bemana and Lodoni.

Coach Ali said his boys have prepared well for the tournament and are confident of returning home victors come Sunday afternoon.

“We have prepared thoroughly for the tournament and will be out to defend the title which we won in 1992 when the tournament was last held, said Ali.

“We have a mixture of young and experienced players, who are showing a lot of commitment and promise.

“Bemana, Ba and Lodoni are strong teams also but we will take one team at a time and see how well we can progress in the tournament.

“Competition in the tournament will be tough because a lot of super premier players will feature in the event, making it more exciting and entertaining.

Bemana will have the services of Lautoka brothers Alfraz, Robert and Zibraaz Sahib while Ba and Lodoni are expected to field former Rewa, Ba and Lautoka reps respectively.

Navua plays its match at 6.20pm today against Lodoni and will play Ba tomorrow before battling with Bemana in its final pool match on Saturday.

In another interesting fixture tonight, host Rewa will face an uphill battle against Labasa, which has Azmat Begg, Mira Sahib, Intiaz Begg and Naushad Hussain.

Today’s fixtures: 4pm- Davuilevu vs Kasavu, 5.10pm Savusavu vs Verata, 6.20pm- Navua vs Lodoni, 7.30pm- Rewa vs Labasa, 8.40pm- Nasinu vs Macuata.
