Fiji Football Association has dropped a tall order against its referees if they want to officiate in this year’s Inter-District Championship.
Fiji FA Referees Director, Chandra Segran says referees who fail to attend zonal refresher clinics and fitness tests would not be considered for the biggest annual soccer tournament in Fiji.
He said the performance of referees in every district was consistently monitored before they officiate in Fiji FA-sanctioned matches.
“My office has given a directive to all development officers around Fiji to organize weekly fitness training and conduct lectures for referees,” he added.
“This started two weeks ago and the response was overwhelming. We have also organized a seminar on September 13-14 in Suva. Those who fail to turn up for weekly training in their respective zones and the seminar up will not be considered for the Courts Homecentres IDC.”
Segran when questioned about the dubious decisions of some referees and assistant referees in the last two tournaments said, “there is always pressure on referees officiating big games and people should realize that referees are also human. I admit that they make blunders but manhandling and abuse does not help anyone.”
“We have match commissioners present at matches to judge the performance of referees and assistant referees. If they find any referee making a wrong decision then we will address that seriously.”
“We sent an assistant referee home after he awarded an off-side goal in the Suva-Rewa match during the Fiji FACT this year and we will come down hard against any referee that under-performs or does not do justice to his job” he added.
Recently, referee Dhiren Kewal was manhandled by Suva players and officials during the Battle of the Giants tournament in Suva when he awarded a controversial penalty to Labasa in the last seconds of their semifinal match. Labasa won 3-2.
The Courts/Homecentres Inter District Championship will be at Govind Park in Ba from October 9-12.

Just check and see if Dhiren Kewal can make it to the dates given or else Chandra Segran will have to come up with a new date or an excuse to cover his friends behind....:)

In think FIFA should adopt one thing from American Football-team coach should be given 3 opportunities to challenge referee's decision during the game. Each game (major tournaments) needs to have an ongoing video recording. During coaches challenge, the game pauses for 15-30seconds, during which all the 4 game officials review the contraversial issue challenged by the coach. If the referee is shown to be wrong, then the decision is reversed, the coach does not lose the challenge number. If the referee's initial decision was right, then the team coach loses the challenge number (i.e will have only 2 challenges left from initial 3). This way, critical decisions are sorted out during the game and no team gets victimised for wrong decisions by referee. This will also take away the indignation created in players and fans by perceived errors of referees.

At last the authorities have made the right decision. To improve the game of football in Fiji, refereeing has to improve. Slack refereeing results in the national team getting sacrificed while on national duties, because there the refereeing standard is what it should be.
Examples of poor refereeing is shown in all league games and tournaments in Fiji, just a few Iwould like to add. I witness this first hand. Referee's dont use the diagonal to follow play, the just run up and down the centre of the pitch, Assist. Ref's dont follow the ball all the way through, either they are to have infront of play or to far behind, all this is about fitness and commitment which to say I don't even see in the current FIFA referee of FIJI.
They think only they know the rules of the game and no one from the crowd of 13,00 plus at tournaments will look at their commitment.
If Fiji FA really wants to move up in the international ranking they should utilize better referee's or get more strict on their referee's in Fiji.
