Netball Fiji’s newly appointed Coach Melissa Walker is eager to start with her development plan to rebuild the image of the sport in the country.
Walker who arrived in the country last night indicated that she was not discouraged with the delay after being informed about the associations’ financial status.
“It’s been very overwhelming and I was lucky to meet the officials, assistant coaches and manager when I arrived last night,” Walker said.
“I wasn’t discouraged when Netball Fiji was taking their time in bringing me over because I’ve been in contact with Wati (Seeto) from day one. We were like good friend even though I haven’t physically met her. From day one I’ve always known what’s going on and I’ve been very appreciative of that so the communication was always open even though I was not here,” Walker said.
Being in Fiji is like a dream come true for the New Zealander and after watching Fiji’s dismal performance at the World Cup last year; Walker has vowed to make the most of her stay in Fiji.
“I was lucky enough to watch Fiji at the World Netball Championship I mean for me I think that Fiji was just unlucky to drop from the top but that’s not going to happen again. About six years ago, it was my plan and my goal to become an international coach. For me this is a dream come true because it’s in the South Pacific and it’s always closer to home.
“Being here is a challenge and also a long process. This is a building job and not just a band aid for a short span of time. My focus is not just on the South Pacific Games and I want it to be more than that. I want to develop the sport from grassroots and it’s probably one of the main reasons why Netball Fiji has been attracted to me because I’ve done a lot of development back home.”
The former NPC coach will meet with the Netball Fiji executives tomorrow to discuss the terms and conditions of her contract.
