Fiji Football now ranked 146th
August 08, 2008

Fiji soccer team has moved up two places in the latest FIFA rankings from 148 to 146 despite not playing any international matches in recent times.

The move up the ladder is expected to rise further in the next ranking releases if Fiji manages to win its remaining encounters in the World Cup qualifiers against Vanuatu and New Zealand.

Fiji which is practically out of the running for the top spot from Oceania for the World Cup has two group matches against Vanuatu and one against the Kiwis remaining and impressive performances in the three matches will surely improve the rating of the team.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar is adamant of a better ranking after the three international matches and remains positive of Fiji’s chances in the three matches.

“Coach Carlos Buzzetti will be bringing his players in camp soon to prepare for the matches against Vanuatu next month, said Kumar.

“The New Zealand match is in November and we should have a well prepared team for that encounter as well to better our ranking and standard of performance” he added.

New Zealand leads the Oceania region with a standing of 111 and New Caledonia is second with a ranking of 116 after jumping 10 places up on the ladder.

Solomon Islands sit at third position with a ranking of 129 after jumping seven places due to its impressive form in the shorter codes of football namely Beach Football and FUTSAL.

European champs Spain still maintains its number one spot and is followed by Germany, world champs Italy, Netherlands and Croatia in the top five.

The next FIFA ranking will be released on September 3.
