Oceania Boxing Association president Reginald Leca has predicted tough times for Fiji boxing if development is not heeded by local authorities.
While he supports the Boxing Fiji Commission set up by the Interim Government to govern and safeguard the affairs of the sport in Fiji, the New Caledonian-based boxing expert said Fiji needs to return to grassroots development to emerge as a regional and global winner.
“Fijian boxers are some of the best boxers I have seen in the world, but there is insufficient assistance to help them excel,” he added while transiting through Fiji from Tonga this week.
“You have produced boxers like Sunia Cama, Sakaraia Ve, Joy Ali and Frank Atu but you do not have the proper equipment to build new boxers. Your executives are neglecting this and it is affecting your boxing. Unless you get your basics right you would not be able to win in international boxing,” Leca added.
Leca is ready to work with Fiji officials once the new commission is approved.
The Interim Government is yet to gazette the commission where it would be supervised and guarded by newly elected board members.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports is closely working with respective local boxing executives on the implementation of the new commission.
Leca hopes to bring a New Caledonia boxer to Fiji in November once the new commission is up and running.
