Navua braces for historic BOG opener July 20, 2008
The small rice farming town of Navua will come alive this afternoon when its soccer heroes for the very first time in their football history host a tournament match on their home soil.
And to mark the occasion, the association has planned a mini carnival at Thompson Park which will coincide with the Anaconda Boys opening Battle Of the Giants pool clash against Tavua.
Navua soccer boss Anil Sharma, dubbed the “King of Navua” said this was a special occasion for the people of Navua and they want to make it a memorable one as today will add another chapter to the history of Navua football since its promotion in the Super Premier division in 1989.
“We will have a carnival atmosphere this afternoon in Navua and are expecting people from all walks of life to come in and be part of the occasion, he said.
“There will be multicultural items performed by students of Rampur College and there will be heaps of other activities and entertainment as well.
“Navua has prepared well for BOG under coach Gurjeet Singh and is banking on its supporters to come out in numbers and rally behind the boys.
“We will also unleash OFC golden boot winner for last season Commins Menapi and Solomon Islands midfielder Stanley Waita in the match against Tavua and am sure people are eager to watch them in action.
“Tavua is a good side and we will not be taking them lightly as all teams prepare well for tournaments” he added.
Rugged defender Pene Erenio will marshal the boys in blue and red and will be ably supported by the likes of goalie Simione Tamanisau, defenders Rajneel Chand, Seveci Rokotakala, Siga Ali, Usaia Tadu, midfielders Thomas Vulivuli, Waita, Pranil Chand and strike force of Menapi and defender cum striker Apisai Smith.
The Southern Forest Navua- Tavua clash gets underway at 3pm.

Navua appears to be star-studded once again, and I expect the team to perform well. You certainly have a real chance to win BOG.
