Front runner Nadroga continue to dominate the Digicel Rugby Cup after thumping Tavua 48-12 in a bonus point win at Garvey Park.
The star studded Nadroga side handed Tavua their sixth loss this season not only to expose the cracks in their game structure but to deny them a win in front of their home crowd.
Tavua’s halfback Peniasi Vauvau scored their only try which was converted by Mesulame Soga but it was not enough to even the margin as Nadroga ended the first spell with two converted tries from number eight Iliesa Ratuva and two unanswered from French based Jovili Domolailai and Fero Lasagavibau for 24-7 lead into the breather.
Tavua was fortunate to capitalize on Nadroga’s mistakes after the kick-off in which Soga’s boots added six points to their overall stats but Wales based Isoa Neivua, Setefano Somoca and Apisalome Waqatabua have stamped their mark in this fixture.
But the show was not over until France based and Top 14 leading try scorer Napolioni Nalaga made his presence known by running the last try to seal a strong win.
Namosi fails to impress over Lautoka
Despite the support of its home crowd the defiant Namosi side failed to maintain the rhythm of their performance and went down fighting 19-12 in favour of the touring Lautoka side at Thompson Park.
Namosi pulled out a surprise in the early stages of the game when Asesela Uluikavoro successfully converted a try by Malakai Soi. The side played entertaining rugby to impress the home crowd in the act managed an unconverted try by Lasaro Tugaradrau.
In return Lautoka’s outside center Ropate Ratu scored an uncoverted try while Moape Koroi slotted a penalty to end the first spell 8-12 in favour of Namosi.
The sugar city side had a fresh start after the breather not only did they outdo Namosi but they defended their territory well giving the host no progress on the scoreboard. Lautoka drew a strong conclusion after Pauliasi Rokosuka ran an uncoverted try while the two penalties from Setareki Ritova ended their sixth round on a winning note.
Nadi on course to defend their title
Title holder Nadi is on course to defending their title after defeating Northland 16-13 at Thompson Park.
Nadi took control of the game after the opening whistle and an unconverted try from speedster Sionasa Vunisa and a penalty booted by Asaeli Driu ended the first spell.
It was a slow start for the Northland outfit after speeds merchant Saimoni Votua ran an unconverted try while a penalty booted by Josaia Vulawalu became a wake up call for Nadi.
Inspired by late start, Northland’s number eight Sefanaia Bogi added another five points to their stats with his unanswered try while a drop goal from Driu and try from Aca Bibi was enough to give the jetsetters a win.
Suva edges Ovalau at home
Ovalau came close but not enough to defeat Suva (12-15) in the sixth round of the Digicel Rugby Cup in Nasau Park.
Suva emerging as top contenders for the title was awarded a try by Waisale Beci but Ovalau in utmost defend took control of the first spell after speedster Mosese Naivolasiga scored an unconverted try for a 7-5 lead at halftime.
Suva took over after the breather and ran two unconverted tries from Dan Ligairi and Jeke Lalai but Ovalau’s try last try came from the dying stages of the game and proved pointless as the game ended 15-12 in favour of the visitors.
Luveitasau leads by example Naitasiri skipper Mosese Luveitasau led by example after leading his gladiators to a 15-10 win over Rewa at Burebasaga grounds.
His international exposure with Wales based Cardiff Blues club proved instrumental after running an unconverted try for the Hillmen while Rewa’s points were amassed in the first spell with the two unconverted tries from Tevita Deve and Leone Limalevu for 10-5 at the break.
Despite the lead, Naitasiri staged a dramatic second half after Luveitasau scored another two unanswered tries to end the game 15-10.
