Two Indo-Fijian school girls are turning heads at the Sprite-Lite basketball league.
Andrea Narayan and Nandika Singh were part of the Yat Sen Secondary School under-15 girl’s outfit that went down fighting 6-12 to Gospel High School at the secondary school’s competition in Suva today.
Singh who is now used to competition at national level proved too good on her debut last year and was drafted into the Oceania Youth Women’s squad- an extended training squad drafted as part of the Basketball Fiji development program.
“I’m impressed with the response from the participating schools and it’s good to see that other races have shown interest in basketball,” said Basketball Fiji executive Fanny Simpson.
“Nandika started playing basketball last year and has performed well to get a spot in the Oceania squad, I hope the same works for Andrea.”
BF has adopted a new format to their competition in which teams from respective grade play a round robin game before the top four teams are selected for the semifinals.
“We’re trying to inject more competition into our weekly outing so we’ve changed the format so that teams work hard for a qualifying spot,” said Simpson.
The opening round started on a high note with 48 teams aiming for a good start to the competition.
The under-17 competition saw Suva Grammar School take down YSS 16-12 while LDS thumped Saint Joseph’s second string team 44-5. The under-19 competition has been postponed to next week due to the slippery surface at the Suva Grammar court.
