Serevi as best candidate for coach: Raoma
July 03, 2008

If Fiji rugby is to establish and enhance its dominance in the international sevens rugby scene then it must bring back Waisale Serevi says former New Zealand 7s pivot and Captain Amasio Raoma.

“I cannot understand why the Fiji Rugby Union is stopping Waisale Serevi,” Raoma told Fijilive in an exclusive interview in Suva today.

“It is a stupid move and it benefits other international teams especially New Zealand,” he added before jetting off to New Zealand to attend a honorary dinner for legendary NZ 7s coach Gordon Tietjens tomorrow .

The dinner is to salute Tietjens for his services and contribution to rugby in NZ.

“Serevi is the best 7s player. He should be brought in to coach or play. He is still the best and at 40, no one can beat him. If Fiji wants to win then it should restore Serevi. Fiji will find it hard to win the World Cup if Serevi is not there,” he added.

With words of wisdom spilling forth from one of the legends of world rugby 7s and with the FRU expected to announce its new coach after the winless misfortune of the last IRB 7s Series under Josateki Savou and Opetaia Ravai, the ball is on the court of the FRU Board if it is serious in retaining the World Cup in Dubai next March.

The FRU changed its 7s coach selection criteria looking for IRB Level 2 Certificate holders meaning Serevi, dubbed the best rugby 7s player in the world is out technically.

The new appointee should have considerable international and local 7s experience in coaching and a God fearing man.

Whether it is for copy book regulation or to keep the 7s maestro out, fijilive gathered that most local coaches attained their Level 2 coaching certificates in the last two years.

Another NZ 7s rep Liam Messam who featured for the NZ Maoris in Lautoka last month said as long as Serevi is out of the Fiji 7s list, New Zealand will always have a walk in the park in the IRB 7s Series.

Serevi, despite lack of qualification is among 10 applicants for the top job.

It is also believed that Fiji 15s coach Ilivasi Tabua will be in charge of the Fiji team to Dubai next march.

i do not believe Iivasi tabua should coach Fiji Sevens. He should concentratee on fifteens and look 2 improve the basic mistakes his team keeps committing against aus n all other teams. they made the world cup quaterfinals so hey have 2 be a notch up. Sevens is serevis game he should b the coach n in that way everybody wins. Fiji rugby is not getting anywhere with the current bunch of plans they have n mind.

THE FRU need a reality check serevi won the first RB sevens series under serevi bt under savou there r winless. he knows more about savou, savou team cant even beat scotland f FRU cant understad this then even they should all resign so thatthey dont keep disappointin the people of fiji we r all tired of their feeble excuses.

I think the onli people who lack qualification are the people adminstrating te FRU because they cant seem to get a simle logic that without serevi sevens goes nowhere...i think thier post shuld be advertised as well n one of the requirements should be that the applicant should understand basic logic n work in buildin a better future
