League battle warms up in Vodafone Cup July 03, 2008
Six teams face relegation if they don’t win their remaining games in the Vodafone League Club Championships this weekend.
Only eight top teams will battle for top honours in the club quarterfinals and four from the ten existing clubs have already confirmed their spot in the eliminations.
Mango Boy Resort Cowboys, Kadar Buksh Saru Dragons, Dee Cees Nadera Panthers and Islands Electric Lautoka Crushers all breathe a sigh of relief this weekend (all place at the top of the table respectively).
But it is Suva Bookshop Nabua Broncos, Traps City Storm and Turtle Islands Makoi Bulldogs that will have to fight tooth and nail to bag their two last wins in the Eastern Conference competition.
Broncos (fifth spot in the standings after Round 13) play the feature match this weekend at Buckhurst Park against table toppers Cowboys.
“Both teams have a dangerously fast backline,” Fiji National Rugby League administrator Rusiate Ratakele said.
“They do not have the services of elite Bati reps but they have proved to be forces to reckon with with their young upcoming players.”
Nemani Suguturaga will lead the Broncos bid as they desperately seek their spot in the top eight while Jone Macilai, the only experience in the Cowboys pack will look to maintain their winning reputation.
“Expect a tough match too in the match against Stormers and Panthers,” Ratakele said.
“Stormers have the weight, height and can do a lot of damage to the Panthers young fast players.
“Panthers have the speed and good ball control but they shouldn’t commit a lot in attack because it is there they will lose their footing.”
In the Western Conference, the feature game will be Dragon’s versus second last placed J Kevi Group Sabeto Roosters.
“Roosters have a lot to prove, they face relegation if they do not win their last two matches. It will be tough to beat Dragons who have had a good season this far,” Ratakele added.
He 14th round of the Vodafone League Club Competition kicks off at Buckhurst and Park and Lautoka Methodist School grounds on Saturday.
