Cricket seeks more funding at Dubai meet July 03, 2008
The Fiji Cricket Association is keeping their fingers crossed that the International Cricket Council will give it more financial assistance to enhance the development of the sport.
Fiji Cricket president Ilaisa Kacisolomone is currently in Dubai for the week long ICC general meeting and will making submissions for funding to help boost their calendar this year.
Secretary Omid Saberi said the funding would depend on their competition planned for the year.
“We have quite a number of events, trips overseas and international teams coming down for games so yes we are eagerly anticipating their ruling for funds,” he said.
The senior team is expected to play n the world cup qualifiers in October in Tanzania while a Vanuatu team and English team are expected in the country in October for multiple games.
“We also have a New Zealand junior team expected in the country in September and the next round of the world cup qualifiers in January so yes, Fiji Cricket has a very exciting few months up ahead.”
Saberi also confirmed that for the first time, they would be hiring a general manager to deal with day to day operations for Fiji Cricket.
“We have had a lot of interested applicants, majority of whom are from overseas, we have had some local applicants too and this is really encouraging because with our busy schedule coming up, it would be good to have just a particular person deal with it.”
Fiji Cricket to date has introduced cricket into 28 schools and have development officers in the west.
They plan to send officials to the Advance Coaching in Development Seminar from September 1-5 in Melbourne.
