FRU to screen, name 7s coach next week
July 02, 2008

A number of selected coaches screened from the ten applicants vying for the top job of the Fiji sevens team coach will be given a chance to present their proposed plan of mapping the way forward before a suitable candidate is chosen.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua says the FRU board will be sitting this week to asses the applications before selecting the suitable candidate who will make their presentation from which they will make a decision by next week.

Applications for the top job closed on Monday.

Tavanavanua confirmed that interviews will be conducted next week after applications will be reviewed in a board meeting tomorrow.

“There is still no progress on the sevens coaching job because we still have to look into the applications. So far we received 10 applications with three overseas experts showing their interest for the job. We’re having a board meeting tomorrow and our main agenda is to view all applications once we’ve shortlisted we’ll conduct an interview next week,” Tavanavanua said.

After Fiji failed to perform to expectation during the IRB sevens series this season, FRU has outlined a strict selection criteria in a bid to select a qualified and experienced person to guide Fiji quest to retaining the prestigious Melrose Cup.

“Our criteria is very clear, we’re looking for an experienced person with a level two coaching certificate. Successful applicants shortlisted for the interview will have to present their coaching method before us and should be able to identify talents and to look into the development of the code.”

Former national sevens coach Josateki Savou have re-applied in a proposal to get his job back while others who have applied are former sevens coach Peni Veidreyaki, Nadi coach Iliesa Tanivula and sevens maestros Waisale Serevi.

With eight months away from the IRB sevens World Cup in Dubai, FRU is expected to name a coach next week.
