Fiji athletes finish second in Saipan July 01, 2008
Team Fiji finished second to New Zealand and ahead of Australia in the 2008 Oceania Championships at the Oleai Track and Field Stadium in Saipan, Marshal Islands over the weekend.
Fiji edged Australia by two gold medals, scooping a total 11 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.
Louy Frank, Isoa Me, Iowane Dovumatua and Setareki Tikosaya were in outstanding form as they came in with medal after medal to add onto Fiji’s tally.
Frank won gold in the mens triple jump (14.23m), Me bagged the mens 200m (21.93sec) while Tikosaya settled for silver (22.02sec) and the trio teamed up with Dovumatua in the 4x100m relay to finish first (42.71sec). Sireli Naikelekelevesi had to settle for silver in the mens 1500m (4:03.79sec) while Jone Wainiqolo came second in the 400m hurdles (55:79sec). The women raked in their share of glory with Ballantine Memorial School sprinter Paulini Korowaqa bagging the womens U18 400m (57.81sec).
The womens 4x100m team came in second (49.92sec) ahead of Australia.
New Zealand finished at the top of the medal tally. Samoa bagged a total of 10 gold, three silvers and a bronze medal while Australia settled for nine gold, 11 silver and five bronze. New Caledonia finished with a haul of four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
Making up the rest of the medal standings are Guam (4 gold, 6 silver, and 13 bronze), Tahiti (4-6-5), Tonga (1-7-5), CNMI (1-6-9), Solomon Islands (1-2-2), Kiribati (1-1-2), Norfolk Islands (1-0-1), Palau (one silver), Vanuatu (two bronze), and Nauru (one bronze).
