Blackout sees volleyball anti-climax June 29, 2008
Improper facilities at the Namaka multi purpose courts saw an anti-climax final at the Fiji Indoor Volleyball association east versus west and volleyball festival in Nadi yesterday.
The tournament had to be cut short with Men’s competition finalists Suva and Vatuwaqa sharing the prize money after the flood lights failed to illuminate the court for the crucial showdown.
Both eastern teams had to split the first prize for the East versus West tournament while the volleyball festival was also affected with Raiwai and Nadawa sharing the spoils.
“Unfortunately time was an element to the event and we had to call off the final because the flood lights were not working. We had to split the first prize for the top two finishers and we hope that next year the event will be bigger and better. The revival of the East versus West started on a low note due to short notice but a greater response is expected next year,” tournament coordinator Kalaveti Kunatuba said.
Without much response, a round robin format was adopted for the women’s competition after five teams registered for the competition.
Suva proved dominant in the East versus West tournament after defeating Raiwai with two straight sets while Grandville side from Nadi claimed the volleyball festival title after edging Swami Viveknandan College 2-1.
In the volleyball festivals men’s competition, Suva defeated Namaka 2-0 to feature in the final of the East versus West while Vatuwaqa edged Lautoka 2-1 to secure a spot in the final.
