More than 100 international paddlers are expected to give our local competitors a good run for their money when the Waitui Fiji Outrigger International tournament kicks off next week.
With 300 paddlers confirming their participation in the annual event, Fiji Outrigger Canoeing Racing Association president Colin Philip has indicated the interest of overseas competitors will boost the two-day competition.
“Six countries have confirmed their participation to this event and PNG is one of the new teams coming in this year. 300 paddlers have confirmed their participation, 200 local while the remaining are international participants. This year there has been a positive response gathered from the international participants so we’re expecting a competitive outcome,” Philip said.
With New Zealand being the defending champs in the junior category and the Open men grade, they would be using this tournament to gauge their preparation for the World Sprints in Sacramento, USA.
International teams confirmed for the event are Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Wallis and Futuna, Western Samoa and Papua New Guinea.
The Hobie 16 world champs venue will now be used as a canoe centre. The event will officially start on April 16 while the race begins the day after.
