Labasa breaks 14-year CVC jinx
April 05, 2008

The Labasa soccer side created history this afternoon at Govind Park when they ended Ba's 14 year reign with a well deserved 2-1 victory in the second leg of the Pillay Garments CVC series.

The Babasiga Lions scooped a prize money of $3000 while Ba got $1000.

As expected, the match turned out to be a thriller and fireworks exploded straight from the first whistle and continued till the final moments of the match.

Vodafone Men In Black Ba backed by a jam packed Govind Park supporters started the first half well and displayed their typical one touch football in the first fifteen minutes but lost their momentum as Labasa crowded their midfield and started to play long high balls to speedster Maciu Dunadamu who time and again beat the Ba defence with ease but failed to capitalise on his chances.

Central midfielder Thomas Vulivuli missed a golden opportunity after being set up neatly by Henry Dyer in the 32nd minute. Vulivuli lost possesion on a one one situation to Ba goalie Nicholas Lawrence.

Dunadamu livened up the match in the 42nd minute when he finally managed to place the ball neatly beyond the reach of diving Lawrence.

The goal brought joy to the Labasa officials and fans and added more pressure as Ba had to score three clear goals instead of two which was the initial scenario.

The Babasiga Lions led 1-0 at halftime and did not look back in the second spell and went attacking from the kickoff and were rewarded with their second goal in the 18th minute when nippy midfielder Dinesh Mudliar completed a Labasa onsalught on Ba goalmouth with his second attempt which landed in an empty net as Lawrence was well beaten out of his goal.

Majority of the Ba fans lost hope after the second goal and made their way out of the Park expressing their disappointment at the dismal performance of the home side.

Ba brought in their super sub Tuimasi Manuca in place of Niumaia Tagi to add spark to their attack but tight defence by Taniela Waqa, Samuela Kautoga, Apisalome Turuva and birthday boy Nemani Rasiga gave the Ba attack no chance.

Stocky Ba striker Josaia Bukalidi did not have a good day in the field at all as he missed over a dozen opportunites and waited for the ball to be delivered to his feet.

National midfield general Avinesh Warran Swamy tried to keep pressure on the Labasa goal with his thunderous strikes from outside but superb goalkeeping by Shamal Kumar kept him out of the score sheet.

Dunadamu, Henry Dyer, Mudliar and replacement Ajesh Narayan missed clear opportunities after outclassing the Ba defence but lack of proper finishing denied the Lions more goals in the match.

Ba introduced Maviliko Nakama in the dying minutes of the match and the youngster proved his worth as beautifully placed the ball to the back of the net to pull one back and gather some respect for the Men In Black in the extra time.

Tears of joy flowed freely amongst the Vodafone Labasa players and officials after the final whistle by referee Rakesh Varman as the northerners snatched the Champions title and status from the Men In Black.

The teams:

Ba-Nicholas Lawrence, Malakai Keinahewe (C) (Maviliko Nakama),Leone Vurikania,Shalen Lal, Jone Vesikula,Avinesh Swamy, Alvin Singh (Rinal Prasad), Shamil Rao, Niumaia Tagi (Tuimasi Manuca), Josaia Bukalidi, Ronald Lawrence.

Labasa-Shamal Kumar, Taniela Waqa, Samu Kautoga, Sandeep Nair (Kushal Naicker), Nemani Rasiga, Apisalome Turuva, Henry Dyer, Thomas Vulivuli,Dinesh Mudliar (Ajesh Narayan),Pita Bolaitoga (C), Maciu Dunadamu.

Ya i guess ba fans hav had most of the glory in past years.....i think thats why there back is on FIRE when Ba lost at home....n about keeping posession n counterattacking...wel Ba kept posession for long periods...but in there own half of the field.....whats the use...i think if u give the ball to a group of 9yr olds i have no doubt they can keep the ball for long periods in their own half....n people of BA should be thankfulthat LABASA only played counterattack or else they would have been humiliated to see there faces on TV in the replay of the game....well they were humiliated anyway....LEAVING THE GREAT GOVIND PARK EVEN BEFORE THE GAME ENTERED THE HOUR MARK>>>>al greatness down the drain....n al of FIJI saw it...dont believe me ask the person sitting beside u....that is if ur a BA fan....

Nearly a year up from the last CVC. Just reading through the comments and suprisingly, Labasa is not playing this year. Ok Lautoka is in but now I would like to suggest to people who commented on this site before on this news to go through what you wrote and see if your predictions were right. I am sure Ba is playing again yeah. I said it before and I am repeating again, no use jumping to conclusions or downgrading any team. It normally comes back to hurt you when you don't have your team playing.
Ladies and gent's think again what we wrote and what good are we doing to anyone with our comments. All different people come in here to read good things not to go through all this ill fighting. Stand up and make a different if you can or else zip it and enjoy football ofr god sake

The BA team has POLISHED the C.V.C trophy so well in the last 14 years that as it sits in the Friendly North Town of Labasa, the shine of the glory on the BA soil, could be seen all the way here in New Zealand too. Once again thanks very much Black Rats. . . . . ! try your luck with other teams in Fiji Soccer not with Labasa ! Daud N.z.

to theguywithstyle...dnt be too quick to jump to conclusions...dan waqa is from ltka...no district at heart...they are professional players or semi and earn good money while playing soccer and so is Roy doing in NZ...so dnt blame roy for leaving labasa...yes labasa won the CVC but the year is not over and certainly this is not Ba's year...my bet is either ltka or nadi...ltka beat the same labasa team at govid park this year..actually thrashed them...so the picture abhi baki hai mere yaar!!!!

Just to highlight.
Some good comments. Congrats to Labasa. Took 14 years but did it in the end. Congrats again. I am not here to blame or point fingers at anyone. Just want to say that it feels so good to see people have got their teams back home still at heart.
No two days are the same, Iam from Ba originally but residing in Auckland NZ now. I keep track of the happenings in Fiji Soccer, was fortunate to see IDC last year, referee by profession, but then again, teams like Nadi, Suva, Navua, Lautoka were very impressive in IDC. Its the commitment that counts. I will try and follow these comments through out the year. I am pretty sure tones will change.
What I would like to suggest please its just suggestion is to cheer your teams right good comments about your teams. Degrading another team in here is not going to make any difference to the team. Iam pretty sure all this is not passed to the teams, Teams in Fiji needs supporters not haters.
Iam from Ba, I enjoy the game of football, Solomons is playing this sunday Waitakere in O League Final in Auckland, I will still go. because I love Football.
ladies and gentlemen our teams back home need support. Verbal it may be. But we will only create our own enemies by replying to some comments that we don't like abuout our team back home dropped in here.

Cheers. All the best to all teams in 2008 season.

yo guys whateva u all say about ba.just remember 1thing it took u LA's 14 years to prepare and take the CVC champianship.

afterall we had to be mercyfull to the other teams,so that the tournment becomes bit more interesting, rather than we black power winning all the time.uz won once doesnt mean uz on top of the world, the higher u fly now,the lower u'll fall when ba will kick all your backs.

hav fun

History is good, but recent history is what is expected in recent future:

Results of the last 4 matches between Ba and Labasa:

1st - Labasa 3 Ba nil by mouth
2nd - Ba 4 Labasa 2
3rd - Labasa 1 Ba nil by mouth
4th - Labasa 2 Ba lousy 1

3/4 is 75% chance of beating Ba.

Now the blackies can go back in history and bring up records of players who are no longer there. That's ancient history.

Anyone heard from Rishi Kumar yet? Kaun bill mein hal gaye yaar????? Lions scared him, aye?

Labasa proved that it can win with its die-heart players. Roy must be licking his wounds that he is not a member of the champion side in Fiji.. after what he did in the IDC, he ought to be ashamed he has no heart for his motherland, the place whihc reared him up. Kudos to Taniela Waqa and Nemani Rasiga for being so rock solid in defence. You guys certainly have the heart for ur district. Credits also to inspirational captain Pita Bolaitoga under whose stewardship, the team is doing wonders. And most of all, our deepest gratitude to the unsung hero our President Avinesh Kumar for bringing up Labasa soccer! Your sacrifices won't go unnoticed. Our blessings would always be with this great man! Thanks very much Vodafone Babasiga Lions... you are the best!

As expected Ba losers have said they won it for more years. Come on, will you continue living in your past? If so, then you accepting that Ba is no more the champs. I never thought they were anyway. They won more through court battles and complaints. Rishi Kumar is lost in some wonderworld, raymond returned to the studio without any further comments. Halla band! Sannata cha gaya! Ba is in mourning - all stoves switched off, no more cooking.

Everyone has said what I wanted to in support of LA.

The funny thing is that LA shut Ba supporter's mouth so badly that I don't even see any comments from them. The only thing they can say with their tail between their legs is that Ba won more times which will also change if LA plays like this.

Now they should realise that there are better teams in Fiji than Ba.
