The Western Women’s League competition kicked off over the weekend at the Tilak High School grounds in Lautoka with the hosts registering an impressive 1-0 victory over Nadi.
The Sugar City girls playing with support from the sideline proved a bit stronger for their neighbours and notched the win in the opening match.
Newcomers, Rakiraki with their tremendous young talent held Tavua 0-0 in the second match. While the U-19 West Two and One also played to a nil all draw.
Fiji Football Association Development Officer and former national rep Jackie Chambers said the competition is expected to go up a notch in the next few rounds.
“Ba the 2009 Inter District Championship winners and Nadroga will also be joining the competition. They are expected to further boost the competition.
“Last Saturday’s match was good and we expect the standard to get even better in the weeks to come,” Chambers said.
The Western based development officer who is based at the Dr. Sahu Khan National Football Academy in Ba says the next round will be played on the 27th of this month.
Fiji FA Technical Director Saiyad Ali believes these competitions will assist them in selecting a formidable side for the 2010 OFC Nations Cup in October.
“We have already had the trials but we are still in the hunt for more players that are capable of donning the Fiji Women’s jumper. The squad currently in place has been in camp on a regular basis,” Ali said.
Meanwhile the scheduled training camp for the National Womens squad has been postponed to a later date.
Ali says details of the next camp will be released soon.
Meanwhile, the first ever Fiji FA Football Festival scheduled to coincide with the National Youth Day celebrations has been deferred to a later date.
According to Ali they were in the process of finalizing another suitable date for the festival. The Fiji government this morning announced the deferment of the National Youth Day public holiday to a later date.
