Charlton fears for Beckham's England future
March 16, 2010

Sir Bobby Charlton fears David Beckham may have played his last game for England.

The midfielder's dreams of appearing in an England record fourth World Cup were ended Sunday when he ruptured his Achilles tendon playing for Italian giants AC Milan against Chievo.

Charlton, a key member of the England side that won the 1966 World Cup, said Monday: "I don't know if we will see him in an England shirt again."

Legendary Manchester United and England midfielder Charlton watched Beckham come through the youth ranks at Old Trafford before making his name in the first team under current United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I have known him for a long time and he gets a lot of pleasure out of playing the game," Charlton said of the 34-year-old Beckham.

"Forget about all the finance and the hyperbole that goes with it, he just loves playing football."

Charlton's decorated career was largely injury free but that didn't stop him from sympathising with Beckham.

"If it had happened to me I would have been distraught," he said.

"I was lucky with injuries. He has got one of the worst kind.

"It will take such a long time to get right and you don't have much time when you are 34."
