Nasinu trio cop heavy fines and suspension November 20, 2009
The three Nasinu players that allegedly received bribe from Labasa football officials during their last Inter District Championship pool match in Nadi last month have been slapped with heavy fines and suspension.
Defenders Nitan Kumar, Anish Kumar and Ashish Chand were all found guilty by the independent investigation team yesterday which handed down the suspension and fines to the trio.
Nitan Kumar and Anish Kumar have each been fined $3000 and given 5 years suspension from all levels of football while Chand has been fined $5000 and faces a 6 years suspensions from all level football.
Chairman of the Nasinu disciplinary committee and head of the investigation team, Sadasivan Naicker said the three players had admitted receiving bribe and have been given the fines and suspensions for bringing disrepute to the district and the sport.
“Our team met twice prior to yesterday’s meeting to thoroughly investigate the case and the three players have been found guilty and have been taken to task for their action.”
“Initially it was claimed the three players each received $300 each prior to our pool match against Labasa to lose the match but after investigations, it was found that the players gave $100 each back to our president telling him that it was the amount they had received as bribe.”
“However the players till now are not revealing the name of the Labasa official or supporter that had given them the money to give the match away so Labasa could have qualified for the semifinal.”
“Nitan and Anish attended two out of the three meetings while Ashish to failed to attend any and thus has been given a higher fine and suspension.”
“We will forward our findings and report to Nasinu Football officials who are then expected to forward it to Fiji Football Assocation.”
“The players can also appeal against the decision if they wish to” added Naicker who is also the patron of Nasinu Football Association.
Nasinu beat Labasa 3-2 in the upset match of the IDC after coming from a goal down to send the northerners out of the tournament.
