Navua’s historic win celebrated in style October 25, 2009
Navua’s first Inter District Championship (IDC) win was celebrated in style in the little rice farming township yesterday.
The celebrations started off on Friday afternoon with a mini carnival at the Southern Forest compound in Navua town with a colorful float procession, the public appearance of players and officials and a private awards night at the Lagoon Resort in Pacific Harbor been the highlight of yesterday.
The awards night to mark the achievement of the team at the most prestigious and colorful tournament on the Fiji FA calendar started off with a bang with live entertainment from Fiji’s top boy band group, the Bad Boys orchestra which also had top karaoke artists Jagdish Punja and Ronald Jai performing as guest artists.
Director of Vision group, the owners of IDC sponsor Courts/Homecentres Rajesh Patel who is also a vice president of the Fiji Football Association was the chief guest at the ceremony.
Other invited dignitaries included acting Fiji FA president Dr Hari Kewal, Resident Magistrate Chetaniya Lakshman and Fiji FA life member Sadhu Prasad who traveled from Queensland to attend the function. Also present to give his blessing to the team players and officials was chief of Serua Ratu Mara Vitukawalu.
A cake designed in the shape of a football shape was also cut to mark the historic victory.
The players each received a plaque, gift packs and envelopes which contained their share of the prize money they won at the tournament plus the bonuses promised by president Sharma.
There were special awards for the sponsors, officials and all those that assisted the associated in the 2009 football season which proved out to be one of the most successful ones for the delta town.
Navua not only won the IDC title but the southerners also reigned supreme in the Fiji FACT, National Club Championship, Fiji Futsal IDC and the Fiji FA Beach Soccer IDC.
The night ended with more entertainment and a mouth watering dinner which had a variety of Fijian, Indian and Chinese delicacies.
