Victorious Navua soccer coach, Gurjit Singh says he loves to create history and take teams he coaches to greater heights.
Dubbed the “Guru” of Navua football, the former school teacher who has a colorful history of coaching district teams says dedication and commitment are the best mix to success in the sport which he holds close to his chest.
Speaking at the private celebration function accorded to Navua football team at the Lagoon Resort in Pacific Harbour over the weekend, Singh said the success of any team depends on the commitment and hard work of all the stakeholders.
Singh said this makes his job easier in building a winning combination that will create history in local soccer circles.
Earlier in the day, he wore a special t-shirt which was labeled “Guru” and paraded with his brigade in the township of Navua, receiving accolades and cheers from well wishers and fans of the team.
“Winning titles is not important to me but winning in a spectacular way and creating history is what gives me the greatest satisfaction.”
“I have coached various teams both on the local scene and in the US and have always told my players that; impossible is nothing if we put in dedication and commitment.”
“I believe in myself and also my boys to do the same because its very important to have faith and confidence in yourself because these things will guide and motivate you to go the extra mile and help you to achieve your goals and targets in life.”
“This team is fantastic and I love coaching Navua as we have a very caring and humble president and equally disciplined and hardworking players.”
“The secret to success of this team has been the close bond that is shared by all members and we are like a big family than different individuals here.”
“I love challenges and currently the challenge on hand for me is to guide this team to win more tournaments this year and I am confident about our chances doing well” he added.
Singh has coached various districts in his career ranging from Tailevu Naitasiri, Nasinu, Nadi and now Navua. Besides coaching at district level, he has also coached various secondary school age group teams and the Fiji U20 team.
He migrated to United States some years ago and coached a couple of teams there too before returning to the local front again. His family still resides in USA and he often takes time off his busy coaching schedule to catch up with them.
Earlier this season, he was appointed by Suva as its head coach but he declined after some issues and was then speculated to coach Lautoka but that too did not eventuate.
The appointment of Saiyad Ali as Fiji Football Association’s Development Director resulted in Singh getting his post back with the Navua Football Association who had earlier appointed Ali as their coach of the season saying that Singh was an expensive coach to hire.
Under Guru’s guidance, the southerners have won the Fiji FACT back to back, the National Club Championship, the FUTSAL tournament and the Open Beach Soccer tournament.
Sour grapes ... Guru deserves to be praised guys. Remember his Fiji under 20 team, they were able to beat all districts in Fiji including Ba.

This is rubbish. Most players in Navua were developed by other districts and not by Gurjeet. If he likes challenges then why did he fail with Nadi 2 years ago? Can someone tell me in the many years of coaching how many IDC, how many CVC, BOG and how many League titles Gurjeet has won as a coach. You'll count them on one hand!

Ha Ha, it is good to dream but they say don't dream too much. FijiFact, yes with all international players makes sense, but BOG and IDC, c'mon mates, now you have gone too far.
