Wright-Phillips rejoins Manchester City
August 29, 2008

Shaun Wright-Phillips rejoined Manchester City yesterday as the Chelsea winger completed his move to Eastlands for an undisclosed fee.

Wright-Phillips agreed a four-year contract with Mark Hughes's side and the England international could make his second debut for City in Sunday's Premier League match at Sunderland.

"Manchester City can exclusively reveal that Shaun Wright-Phillips has rejoined the Club," a statement on City's website confirmed.

"The fans' favourite agreed personal terms after completing a medical this morning (Thursday) and joins on a four-year contract following an undisclosed deal being reached with Chelsea."

The 26-year-old, who is believed to have cost City around 10 million pounds (12.4 million euros), had been linked with a move away from Chelsea for several months after a disappointing three-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

He joined Chelsea for 21 million pounds (26 million euros) in June 2006 after starring at City, where he spent seven years, but struggled to repeat that form in west London.

Wright-Phillips started only 43 league games for the Blues, scoring four goals, and he admitted he can't wait to kick-start his career.

"Obviously I'm delighted to come back to City and I just can't wait to get started again," he told City's website.

City boss Hughes was delighted to secure such a high-profile signing so soon after the club's spending power was called into question.

The news that City owner Thaksin Shinawatra's assets had been frozen as a result of corruption and fraud charges in Thailand was reported to have put a dent in Hughes's transfer budget.

But he said: "To actually secure the deal and bring Shaun back home is a fantastic coup for us and I'm sure the supporters will be just as excited as we are to have him back at Manchester City.

"I've always admired him and he's certainly been a target of mine since I came to the football club."

Wright-Phillips is expected to be officially unveiled at a press conference at Eastlands on Friday.
