Opt for a traditional Diwali using clay lamps and candles rather than flicking lights, says the Fiji Electricity Authority.
FEA chief executive Hasmuk Patel says although there have been formal restrictions on the use of flicking lights for Diwali celebrations, people have to be careful on the use of power.
“Diwali is the festival of lights and instead of using the expensive flicking lights, people can always light candles and diyas, it is just as beautiful and also power friendly,” he said.
Earlier this month the FEA had warned of a power crisis unless water levels improved at the Monasavu Dam.
“Currently the water levels at the dam have improved a bit, however we are hoping for more rainfall,” he said.
Patel said if the water level at the dam kept decreasing, there will be frequent nation-wide power cuts and blackouts due to insufficient capacity.
Fiji celebrates the Hindu festival of lights on October 28.
