Ratu Epeli is new GCC chairman
14/10/2008 |
Fiji's interim Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau is now the new Indigenous Affairs Minister and effectively Great Council of Chiefs chairman.
He took over his role yesterday after being reassigned by interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
Ratu Epeli, a former army commander, also takes over the Regional Development portfolio.
He started in his new role yesterday. As Indigenous Affairs Minister he will also be responsible for heading the reconstituted council for hereditary chiefs.
Ratu Epeli declined to comment on his new Cabinet role when contacted but said he would be ready for media inquiries in a few days, when he settles into the job.
Bainimarama is acting Minister for Ratu Epeli's former portfolios, Foreign Affairs and Civil Aviation.
Ratu Epeli headed the army in the early 1980s before being deposed in the 1987 military coup by Sitiveni Rabuka.
He later became Fiji's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Europe. Before becoming army commander he was in the foreign service in Fiji's civil service.
Ratu Epeli is married to Adi Koila, a daughter of former Prime Minister and President, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

Good on you boss ... now Fiji will be heading in the right direction since you are at the helm of the Fijian people. Just rule the way you taught us in the army, no prejudice, no discrimination, and everyone is equal regardless of colour, race or gender.

I hope the same will apply by all Indian people who hold key positions and business to their Fijian employees. It should not be one way traffic.

No matter what people might think of Ratu Epeli, he is a gentleman. A very good choice - and leads by example.

If he couldn't handle Foreign Affairs, how the heck can he take care of Fijian Affairs?

I still say this man is the best man for the Prime Ministership. The late Ratu Mara (God Bless His Soul) wasn't wrong to chose him as a son in law. This is the one.

Now a promised future is in the air for we Fijians and sons and daughters of Fiji. I can only hope this noble son will live up to the standards set by his late father who was more than just a statesman. A truly well liked chief and honest person. Congratulations. Please bring back Fiji, the way the world once should be.
