Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama has arrived in Tonga for the coronation of the island kingdom’s King George Tupou V.
Upon arrival at Fua’motu International airport yesterday morning, Commodore Frank Bainimarama was accorded a full military guard of honour.
His entourage included the three daughters of the late Fiji President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who have close ties with King George Tupou V.
The coronation programme for the last remaining Polynesian monarchy this week includes three coronation balls, a military parade, traditional dancing, a fireworks display, a rugby match and an open-air concert
King George Tupou V will be installed today to the traditional chiefly Tu’i Kanokupolu title, making him the 23rd holder of that title as the head of the dynasty which was founded in the 17th century.
The Taumafa Kava or the traditional installation ceremony of kings is steeped in Tongan culture since the inception of the kingdom of Tonga
Among guests invited to attend the US$2.5 million lavish celebrations are Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito, Thai Princess Chakri Sirindhorn, Maori King, and head of states and prime ministers of many Pacific Islands Countries including Australia, Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Niue, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, French Polynesia and Samoa
Britain will be represented by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
