Soweto delights Suva fans with first gig
09 MAY 2008
A little over 4500 fans crowded the Vodafone Arena at the Laucala Sports City in Suva this evening to witness the two-time Grammy Award winning choir, Soweto Gospel raise the roof with a spectacular performance.
The group performed to a cheering crowd throughout the three-hour concert, performing inspirational African and English numbers that included their own renditions of the songs Amazing Grace, Oh Happy Day, This Little Light of Mine and many more local favourites.
Local tour coordinator Onorina Fugawai of the Class Act Events, said they were overwhelmed with the turnout at the Arena saying that for an 11th hour change of venue and unfavourable wet weather conditions, the turnout was good.
“We had initially booked the National Stadium for the first day of their performance here in Suva but due to the unfavourable wet weather conditions we had to move it to the Arena but the response from the public was good,” Fugawai said
Also at hand to witness the performance of the visiting South Africans was interim Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and his wife.
The group returned to the Suva Motor Inn after their performance where they will be spending the night before leaving for Lautoka tomorrow morning.
They will be staying at the Sheraton on Denarau before presenting their sevusevu in Vuda, before their performance at Churchill Park in the evening.
They will fly out for Australia Sunday where they will continue with their tour around the land down under.
