Fiji police are relying on a taxi driver to identify the man who delivered a letter Wednesday allegedly containing threats on the life of Australian High Commissioner James Batley.
Police spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri told Fijilive that the taxi driver was identified and brought in for questioning yesterday.
He said the taxi driver has been released but will be brought in for identification when needed by police.
Sokomuri said the driver told police that he was hired by a Fijian man wearing a bula shirt from the Kundan Singh Supermarket in Tamavua, a minute’s drive from the High Commission.
“The taxi driver told police that the man asked him to drop a letter with the security at the gate,” he said.
“The taxi driver later dropped the man near the Colonial War Memorial Hospital's new wing."
Meanwhile, Sokomuri said security outside the Commissioner’s house and the High Commission have been beefed up.
In a statement, the Commission said that neither the High Commission nor the Australian Government would be intimidated by threats.
