The much-awaited sitting of the new Great Council of Chiefs, which was supposed to take place next month, may not happen due to time constraints encountered by the GCC taskforce team.
Taskforce Chairman, Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo is having second thoughts of the formation of the council, which was supposed to take place in June.
“This might not happen because at the moment we are trying to get all the provinces to install their chiefs, which needs some time, but we are positive that the meeting will happen.”
Ratu Josateki said that installations will not be an easy task as the 14 provinces in Fiji have different traditions and custom to follow and this will take time.
“I hope that all installations would be done in time and we are asking the provinces if they could do this by next month.”
“But we cannot guarantee that the GCC meeting will take place next month so we are pleading with those provinces that are left to install their chiefs to speed up the process otherwise they will be left out.”
Meanwhile, the chiefs of Rewa, Namosi, Naitasiri, Cakaudrove and Tailevu have rejected changes brought by the interim Government to the GCC saying that the move is illegal.
