Former Fiji army commander Sitiveni Rabuka says unlike the current army chief, he did not have a military council after his 1987 coup because politicians had backed him then.
Rabuka said “it was more the politicians who had influenced the actions of the military in 1987” while Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama’s 2006 coup “is an internally generated motive”.
Rabuka said because of the current circumstances, it would be logical for the military council to be advising interim Prime Minister Bainimarama on State affairs.
“They know the agenda, the Prime Minister knows the agenda and if they think anybody is not working in accordance with the agenda it would be the Prime Minister who would decide this is not according to what they are trying to do and therefore should be removed.”
Rabuka was reacting to the military council’s confirmation last week that it is not happy with the performance of some of the 17 interim Cabinet Ministers.
Bainimarama has opted to slash his Cabinet to 13 and appoint some assistant ministers from January 1, 2008.
