Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the IMF managing director arrested Saturday for alleged sexual assault charges, was to be transferred on Monday to Rikers Island, New York city's main jail complex, a Department of Corrections spokesman told AFP.
Rikers Island, a complex of ten jails, has room for about 17,000 inmates, according to the New York City Department of Corrections' website.
Each day, there are approximately 13,000 inmates in New York city jails, most of whom are on Rikers Island and awaiting trial or sentencing.
The 400-acre (162 ha) island is in New York's East River between Queens and the Bronx, near LaGuardia Airport.
