PM to receive report on drought

Fiji’s Disaster Management Committee (DISMAC) and the Department of Hydrology are scheduled to meet tomorrow to prepare a report on Fiji’s current dry weather for Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

Fiji has been experiencing a dry spell lately with parts of the western and eastern divisions feeling the full impact of the dry conditions.

According to DISMAC director Pajiliai Dobui the final decision on whether Fiji’s current dry weather will be declared a national drought will come from the Prime Minister.

Dobui told FijiLive they will provide the government the necessary information gathered by their research teams and those provided by the Department of Hydrology.

The meeting was scheduled for today but has been referred till tomorrow.

Meanwhile the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has confirmed that more than 700,000 liters of water was supplied to islands in the Lau and Yasawa groups.

WAF communications officer Joe Cava said the tanks of water were transported to affected areas in Lau onboard the MV Vatulawa.

Cava added that WAF will supply more water when they receive requests for assistance from those in affected areas.

The efforts will be coordinated through the offices of the respective divisional commissioners.

Cava also confirmed to FijiLive that all areas in the west are being supplied with water except for parts of Rakiraki where water is being carted on alternate days.
